Alla scoperta dei Sassi:itinerario consigliato

Uno dei punti più suggestivi per “scendere” nei Sassi è Piazza Vittorio Veneto, il centro della città. La balconata panoramica si affaccia sul Sasso Barisano e ha difronte la Cattedrale. Si può accedere agli antichi rioni dagli Ipogei - al momento ancora inagibili per lavori di restauro - oppure dal cosiddetto “ponticello”, una scalinata che si trova vicino all’edicola. Si percorre così Via Fiorentini, già immergendosi nel suggestivo paesaggio fatto di stradine, vicoli, vicinati, grotte, ma anche di case palazziate con loggiati ricchi di fregi. In questa parte dei Sassi molti ambienti sono stati ristrutturati e adibiti a ristoranti, negozietti, gelaterie. Dopo i primi 100 metri si presenta una biforcazione dove c’è una fontana: svoltando a  sinistra, in via D’addozio, è possibile vedere le chiese di San Pietro Barisano (splendida!), di Sant’Agostino e ritornare al Piano in prossimità della Villa Comunale; proseguendo verso destra si costeggia la Gravina e si entra nel Sasso Caveoso. E’ una passeggiata molto piacevole e interessante, perchè il percorso è ricco di testimonianze artistiche e storiche: la chiesetta di S. Antonio Abate, la Torre Metellana, le chiese di Madonna delle Virtù e San Nicola dei Greci, dove ogni anno vengono allestite mostre di livello internazionale. Arrivati nella piazza davanti alla Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso si oltrepassa un arco e ci si immette in Vico Solitario, stradina che conduce alle chiese rupestri della Madonna dell’Idris e di San Giovanni in Monterrone (da non perdere!). Qui c’è la possibilità di visitare anche una casa contadina tipicamente arredata, denominata ”Casa - grotta”. Scendendo dalla roccia dell’Idris si prosegue la risalita  verso il Piano per via Bruno Buozzi, dove ci sono gelaterie, negozietti d’artigianato e da cui si accede sulla sinistra al Rione Malve, il primo vicinato dei Sassi ad essere stato ristrutturato e abitato grazie anche all’impegno di giovani volontari provenienti da tutta l’Europa. Sempre in questo vicinato c’è un antico cimitero in cui sono stati rinvenuti arredi tombali e resti umani probabilmente risalenti all’VIII secolo A.C.; la particolarità di questa necropoli è la sua ubicazione su un gradone roccioso che costituisce il tetto della Chiesa rupestre di Santa Lucia alle Malve. Arrivati al Piano, dopo pochi metri sulla destra ci si trova in Piazzetta Pascoli, dove è d’obbligo affacciarsi alla balconata per godere la suggestiva vista del Sasso Caveoso. Buona passeggiata!
